You can form an EtherChannel with up to eight compatibly configured LAN ports on any switching module. All LAN ports in each EtherChannel must be the same speed and must all be configured as either Layer\u00a02 or Layer\u00a03 LAN ports.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Note <\/b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/dam\/en\/us\/td\/i\/templates\/blank.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"2\" border=\"0\" \/>The network device to which a switch is connected may impose its own limits on the number of ports in an EtherChannel.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"Cautn1table\" \/>\n<p><a name=\"wp1029820\"><\/a>If a segment within an EtherChannel fails, traffic previously carried over the failed link switches to the remaining segments within the EtherChannel. When a failure occurs, the EtherChannel feature sends a trap that identifies the switch, the EtherChannel, and the failed link. Inbound broadcast and multicast packets on one segment in an EtherChannel are blocked from returning on any other segment of the EtherChannel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pN1_Note1\"><b>Note <\/b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/dam\/en\/us\/td\/i\/templates\/blank.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"2\" border=\"0\" \/>Make sure that the LAN ports are configured correctly (see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/td\/docs\/switches\/lan\/catalyst6500\/ios\/12-2SX\/configuration\/guide\/book\/channel.html#wp1020420\">&#8220;EtherChannel Feature Configuration Guidelines and Restrictions&#8221; section<\/a>).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"Cautn1table\" \/>\n<p class=\"pB1_Body1\"><a name=\"Configuring_Port_Channel_Logical_Interfaces_for_Layer_3_EtherChannels\"><\/a><a name=\"wp1020478\"><\/a><a name=\"wpxref13310\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p_H_Head2\">Configuring Port Channel Logical Interfaces for Layer\u00a03 EtherChannels<\/h3>\n<div class=\"Note1B\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"Cautn1table\" \/>\n<p class=\"pB1_Body1\"><a name=\"wp1042508\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"pN1B_Note1Bullet\"><b>Note<\/b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/dam\/en\/us\/td\/i\/templates\/blank.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"3\" height=\"2\" border=\"0\" \/>\u2022<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/dam\/en\/us\/td\/i\/templates\/blank.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"21\" height=\"2\" border=\"0\" \/>When configuring Layer\u00a02 EtherChannels, you cannot put Layer\u00a02 LAN ports into manually created port channel logical interfaces.
